Frequently Asked Forklift Questions
Below is a small guide to help you through some of the more
generalized forklift issues people might have. If you have
further questions don't hesitate to call one of our certified

-
When are the proper times to get my equipment serviced?
-
This question is entirely dependent on the level of use you are
putting in to your forklift. A machine that is being operated
for hours on end with little or no breaks will obviously have a
much shorter maintenance cycle. However, in general, it is
considered good practice to have your lift truck serviced every
1000 hours or every four months, whichever occurs sooner.
-
Are there advantages in getting a used forklift over a new one?
-
This a very complex question because of all of the factors
involved. The maintenance costs of a new forklift may be
significantly more cost effective but you will pay for that in
the initial buying price. And since forklifts depreciate
(almost identically to an automobile), the moment it is taken
off the lot the initial value is decreased. So when examining
this question make sure to get all of the facts about a
forklift (i.e. price, warranty options, financing rates,
previous operating record (if used), etc.) In no way is this
always true, but in our opinion a used forklift is a better
investment in the long term.
-
Should I get an electric or an internal combustion forklift
(IC)?
-
As with most heavy machinery questions this depends on the
environment you will be mainly operating the machinery in. For
instance, if your in a warehouse that requires lower
temperatures or in a situation where noise levels would be a
concern, an electric unit is definitely your best investment.
They tend to be much quieter and the exhaust that an internal
combustion forklift will emit can actually raise the
temperature of your work space leading to heat issues. However,
generally the LPG machines have a higher load capacity due to
the increased capabilities of fuel burning engines. Also they
are well suited for outdoor maintenance and if there is a
chance that you will be operating your equipment in the rain it
is a much more sound investment because electric forklifts tend
to short circuit when they come in contact with excessive
water. Weigh all your environmental factors and operational
requirements before choosing an electric model over an internal
combustion lift truck.
-
How often does my forklift need to have new tires?
-
It depends on how often you use it, how heavy your loads are
and whether you only run it on smooth surfaces such as concrete
or outside on gravel or uneven surfaces. As a general rule,
when there is less than one inch from the lettering on the
tires to the top of the tires, it is time to change the tires.
Remember than changing tires can actually reduce fatigue on the
transmission of your forklift as well as operator fatigue.
After a tire is worn 40%, the forklift and the driver are
absorbing over 84% of the shock if it's being run over a rough
surface. The transmission has to work much harder to turn the
tires the same amount of rotation, which can result in a
breakdown. Changing tires is an expensive way to keep your
forklift and operator in good condition.
-
Can I put holes in my forks for towing?
-
The forks of any forklift are one of the most checked upon
features when OSHA performs inspections and unfortunately this
practice is not an acceptable way to alter your forks. Also you
must have your forks replace when 10 percent of the hell is
worn away according to OSHA.
