Below are the some maintenance and operation tips for parts that
most often need to be replaced. This list is not exhaustive but
will help you in choosing the right part for your equipment:
-
Forklift Forks
-
Forks should be examined on a daily basis. Also a comprehensive
examination should be administered every six months. Make sure
to visually inspect forks during the pre-start-up check before
every lift truck session. Note any distortions or cracks or
excessive wear on the forks and depending on the frequency of
use adjust your maintenance schedule accordingly.
-
Forklift Tires
-
Tires should ideally be purchased based on the fork truck you
will be operating. Take the information of your tire down and
match them to tires on the market. All tires, from pneumatic
tires to rough terrain tires need to be industrial strength in
order function properly. A bad set of tires will only make the
forklift labor to move your material- costing you time and
money. And of course, use the manufacturer's recommended air
pressure PSI setting to ensure your fork lift tires last as
long as possible.
-
Forklift Brakes
-
Brakes are one of the easiest components on a forklift to
overlook. Much like an automobile they are worn down very
easily and should be a part of any forklift maintenance
schedule to ensure they are in full working order.
-
Ineffective or worn brakes can result in the fork lift tipping
forward or losing its load. If your fork lift breaks, don't let
it be because of your brakes. Make sure you get the brakes
checked at their scheduled maintenance and replacement times,
and even earlier if you notice the telltale signs of brake wear
with squeaking sounds or slower than usual stoppage.
-
Forklift Exhaust Components
-
Internal combustion machines have the added value of higher
work capacity but the draw back of adding to CO2 emissions in
the work place. Aside from using an electric forklift, here are
some forklift exhaust component practices you can do to help:
- Utilize a catalytic converter. This can reduce emissions
by 97% on most equipment.
- Install commercial soot traps to help clean the exhaust.
- Try using a cleaner fuel grade, such as diesel, that
contains less sulfur.
-
Forklift Engine Components
-
Engines are designed to be and tough but are often operated
continuously for hours under strenuous conditions. Make sure
all the drive components, transmission, fans, filters, belts
and any other component is thoroughly checked regularly to
avoid serious damage and keep your fork lift running for a long
time.
-
Forklift Seats
-
Seats are important not only for the comfort of the driver but
also the smooth operation of the forklift itself. An
ergonomically designed seat can provide higher safety for the
driver as well as make it easier to operate- thus improving
efficiency.
-
Forklift Hydraulic Components
-
Hydraulics is one of the most important aspects of lift truck
operation because they are the sole purpose of the lifting
equipment. Always ensure your hydraulic components are in top
condition to avoid injury and property loss. The maximum
hydraulic pressure should be 110% of the rated load at full
height when the mast is vertical.
-
Forklift Steering Systems
-
An important aspect of fork lift operation is that many have
rear-wheel steering. The steering should be maintained
regularly like all forklift parts but has a much longer wear
time because of the lack of a caster function. Without a
caster, it is not necessary to apply force to maintain a turn,
thus it the strain on the steering component differs from that
of an automobile.
-
Forklift Masts and Mast Accessories
-
A mast is an accessory that will help when attempting to
lifting heavy materials. The fork truck mast is equipped with
big foam filled tires, which gives good traction for operation
on tough terrains. It also can ideally be utilized to load and
unload trucks. A safety forklift screen is a consideration that
should be made to protect workers from the mast itself.
-
Forklift Cables
-
Along with the brakes and transmission, cables are some of the
fastest wearing parts on a lift truck. It is recommended that
before every operation you inspect the fork truck cables for
damage and wear and schedule regular maintenance check ups by a
fork lift professional.
